How Streaming Works
Understanding how AetherWave streams your station helps you make better decisions about content and organization.
The Playlist Model
Unlike traditional live radio, AetherWave uses a playlist-based streaming model. Here's how it works:
-
You build your track library
Add tracks to your station through AI generation, file uploads, or external sources. Each track is stored in our cloud infrastructure (Cloudflare R2). -
Tracks are ordered by position
Every track has a position number. When listeners tune in, tracks play in ascending order by position. You control this order. -
Listeners request the stream
When someone visits your station, our API returns the ordered playlist. Their player loads and plays tracks sequentially. -
Continuous playback
When the playlist ends, it loops back to the beginning. Your station never goes silent as long as you have tracks.
For a true "radio" experience, add enough tracks that listeners don't hear repeats quickly. We recommend at least 2-3 hours of content (40-60 tracks at ~3 minutes each).
What "24/7" Really Means
Your station is always available to listeners. Unlike Twitch or YouTube Live, you don't need to be online or actively streaming. The system serves your playlist on-demand whenever someone tunes in.
Key points:
- No server or computer needs to stay running
- All audio files are hosted in our cloud
- Listeners can join at any time
- Each listener has independent playback (not synchronized)
Listeners are not synchronized with each other. If two people tune in at different times, they'll hear different tracks. This is normal for on-demand playlist streaming.
Your Role as Station Operator
As a station operator, you're the curator and creator. Here's what you're responsible for:
Content Responsibilities
| Task | Description | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Add Music | Generate AI tracks or upload your own to keep content fresh | Ongoing |
| Curate Playlist | Arrange track order for the best listening experience | As needed |
| Remove Content | Delete tracks that don't fit or underperform | As needed |
| Update Branding | Keep station name, description, and artwork current | Occasionally |
| Monitor Analytics | Check listener counts and play statistics | Weekly |
What the System Handles Automatically
- Hosting - All audio files stored in Cloudflare R2
- Delivery - Streaming to unlimited concurrent listeners
- Availability - 24/7 uptime without your intervention
- Statistics - Play counts and listener tracking
- Share Links - Unique codes generated automatically
AI music is NOT automatically generated. You must manually create AI tracks using the Music Studio and then add them to your station. The system does not auto-populate your playlist.

Adding Music to Your Station
There are three primary ways to add music to your station:
AI Generation
Create unique tracks with Suno AI
File Upload
Upload your own audio files
Music Sources Comparison
| Source | Ownership | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| AI Generated | Royalty-free, yours to use | Filling your library quickly with unique content |
| Uploaded | You must own rights | Your own productions or licensed music |
AI Music Generation
AetherWave integrates with Suno AI to generate unique, royalty-free music tracks tailored to your preferences.
How AI Generation Works
-
Go to Music Studio
From your dashboard, navigate to the Music Studio or AI Generation section. -
Describe your track
Enter a prompt describing the music you want. Be specific about genre, mood, tempo, and instruments. -
Generate
Click generate and wait for Suno AI to create your track (usually 30-60 seconds). -
Preview and save
Listen to the generated track. If you like it, save it to your library. -
Add to station
From your saved creations, add the track to your radio station.
AI tracks are NOT automatically added to your station. You must manually generate tracks and then explicitly add them to your station's playlist. This gives you full creative control over your station's content.
Writing Effective Prompts
Better prompts = better music. Include:
- Genre - "lo-fi hip hop", "synthwave", "acoustic folk"
- Mood - "relaxing", "energetic", "melancholic"
- Tempo - "slow", "upbeat", "moderate groove"
- Instruments - "piano", "electric guitar", "808 drums"
- Style reference - "like Boards of Canada", "90s R&B style"
Example Prompts
Chill lo-fi hip hop beat with vinyl crackle, mellow piano chords,
and a relaxed drum pattern. Perfect for late night studying.
Energetic synthwave track with pulsing basslines, arpeggiated synths,
and retro 80s drums. Driving and nostalgic.
Generation Limits
AI generation uses credits based on your subscription plan:
| Plan | AI Tracks/Month | Priority Queue |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 50 | No |
| Studio ($9.99) | 500 | Yes |
| Producer ($34.99) | Unlimited | Yes |

| AAC | .m4a, .aac | Apple format, good quality |
| OGG | .ogg | Open format, good compression |
| FLAC | .flac | Lossless, large files |
Only upload music you have the rights to broadcast. This includes your own productions, royalty-free music, or properly licensed tracks. Copyright infringement may result in account suspension.
Album Art
Each track can have its own album art, which displays in the player:
- Formats: JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF
- Recommended size: 500x500 pixels (square)
- Max file size: 5MB
Track Management
Once tracks are in your station, you have full control over organization and playback.
Ordering Tracks
Tracks play in order by their position number. Lower numbers play first.
- Drag and drop - Reorder tracks visually in the dashboard
- Auto-position - New tracks are added to the end automatically
- Manual numbering - Set specific positions for precise control
Think like a DJ: vary energy levels, don't put similar tracks back-to-back, and consider how the playlist loops. The transition from your last track to your first should feel natural.
Removing Tracks
To remove a track from your station:
- Open your station's track list
- Find the track you want to remove
- Click the delete/remove button
- Confirm removal
Note: Removing a track from your station doesn't delete it from your library. You can re-add it later.
Track Metadata
Each track has the following information:
| Field | Editable | Shows in Player |
|---|---|---|
| Title | Yes | Yes |
| Artist | Yes | Yes |
| Album Art | Yes | Yes |
| Duration | No (auto-detected) | Yes |
| Position | Yes | No |
| Source | No (auto-set) | No |
Going Live
The "Live" status is a flag that indicates your station is actively broadcasting and accepting listeners.
What "Live" Means
When you toggle your station to Live:
- A "LIVE" badge appears on your station
- Your station may be featured more prominently in browse
- Listener count tracking becomes active
- You signal to your audience that you're actively curating
Going "Live" doesn't change how streaming technically works. Your playlist still plays the same way. It's primarily a visibility and status indicator.
When to Use Live Mode
- New content drops - Let listeners know you added fresh tracks
- Special events - Themed listening sessions or premieres
- Active curation - When you're actively managing your station

Frequently Asked Questions
General
Q: Do I need to keep my computer on for my station to work?
No. All audio is stored in the cloud. Your station is available 24/7 regardless of whether you're online.
Q: Are listeners synchronized (hearing the same thing at the same time)?
No. Each listener has independent playback. When someone tunes in, they start from the beginning of your playlist or wherever the player loads.
Q: Does AI music get automatically added to my station?
No. You must manually generate AI tracks and then add them to your station. This gives you full control over your content.
Content
Q: Can I use any music on my station?
You should only use music you have rights to broadcast: your own productions, AI-generated tracks from AetherWave, or properly licensed music.
Q: What happens if I delete a track from my station?
The track is removed from your station playlist but remains in your personal library. You can re-add it later.
Q: How many tracks should I have?
We recommend at least 40-60 tracks (2-3 hours) to avoid listeners hearing repeats quickly. More is better for a true radio experience.
Technical
Q: Why can't I upload files larger than 50MB?
This limit ensures fast uploads and prevents storage abuse. For very long tracks, consider splitting them or using a more compressed format like MP3.
Q: What audio quality should I use?
For MP3s, 192-320 kbps provides good quality while keeping file sizes reasonable. Higher bitrates are supported but increase storage usage.
Q: Can I embed my station on my website?
Yes! Use your share link or contact us for embed code options (coming soon).
