Grok Imagine Prompts & Examples

Grok Imagine is xAI's general-purpose image model and AetherWave's default for ambiguous-intent generation requests. Billed as a flat request rather than per image, currently returning 2 images per call. Fast generations (~30s) and an AtlasCloud failover wired to the same model so a KIE outage does not drop the request - that leg returns one image at the same price. Note it returns JPEG, not PNG, so outputs carry no alpha channel.

This page collects prompts that consistently produce strong output from Grok Imagine when called via the AetherWave MCP server. Each example is structured to highlight what makes the prompt work, so you can adapt the pattern to your own scenes.

Tested prompt examples

These are real prompts that work well. The italics under each example is the actual text to pass via Claude Code.

Example 1
"Cyberpunk DJ booth on a rain-soaked rooftop at dusk, neon pink and cyan reflections, smoke and bokeh, cinematic wide shot"
Example 2
"Abstract synthwave waveform with neon grid horizon, 1980s nostalgia, retro-futuristic"
Example 3
"Anime character studying in a cozy room with rain on the window, lo-fi aesthetic, warm pastel palette"

Prompt structure that works

For Grok Imagine, the prompts that perform best follow a predictable structure:

Tip
Aim for 30 to 80 words. Less than 30 and the model fills the gap with defaults; more than 80 and it can dilute the focus. Grok Imagine responds best to specificity without verbosity.

How to use these prompts

When to pick Grok Imagine

Grok Imagine is the right model when your prompt matches its strengths: multi-variation image generation.

For other intents, the AetherWave MCP rubric in aetherwave_generate_image's description routes the agent to the right model automatically. Run aetherwave_list_image_models from Claude Code to see the full live catalog.

Comparison

vs gpt-image-2-t2i at 9 cr / 1 image: Grok bills 6 cr per request and returns 2 images (about 3 cr/image) as JPEG; GPT Image 2 returns 1 stronger image at 9 cr as PNG. Use Grok to explore cheaply; GPT Image 2 when the result is the deliverable, or when you need transparency.
