Troubleshooting

Why Is My Spotify Canvas Not Showing Up?

The usual answer is that you are looking on desktop. Canvas is a mobile app feature by design and will never appear on the desktop or web player. After that, the causes are propagation delay, the wrong track, or a file that misses one of Spotify's four requirements.

Start here: Canvas is mobile only

This accounts for most reports. Canvas appears in the Now Playing view of the Spotify mobile app. It does not appear on the desktop application and it does not appear in the web player.

So if you uploaded a Canvas, opened Spotify on your laptop to admire it, and saw your static square cover instead, nothing is broken. Pick up your phone, play the track, and open the full Now Playing screen.

Give it a few hours

Canvas is not always instant. It generally appears within a few hours of upload rather than immediately, and it has to propagate out to the app.

Force-closing and reopening the app, or playing a different track and coming back, will often surface it once it has actually gone live. If it has been considerably longer than a day, treat it as a real problem rather than a delay.

Check you attached it to the right track

Canvas attaches per track, not per release. If you have an EP or album, a Canvas added to track one will not appear on track four.

It is also easy to add a Canvas to a different version of the same song than the one you are listening to. Singles, album versions, radio edits and remasters are separate tracks with separate Canvas slots, and streaming services are full of duplicate versions. Confirm you are playing the exact track you edited in Spotify for Artists.

Re-check the file against the four requirements

Spotify publishes four requirements: 3 to 8 seconds, vertical 9:16, between 720px and 1080px tall, and an MP4 or JPG file. A file that misses one of these can be refused at upload.

The most common misses are duration, where an export lands at 10 or 12 seconds, and aspect ratio, where a square cover has been placed on a vertical background but the video itself was exported square.

Be careful with advice about file size here. Spotify does not publish a maximum, and reports exist of uploads failing with error messages that do not match the file at all. If an upload is refused and your file meets the four published requirements, try re-exporting it as a clean standard MP4 before you go hunting for a size rule that Spotify has never stated.

Check your account access

You need access to the release in Spotify for Artists to add a Canvas. If your distributor holds the artist profile, or you have viewer rather than editor access, the option may be missing or the change may not stick.

Newly delivered releases also need to be fully live and claimed on your profile before the Canvas tools become available for them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can I not see my Canvas on desktop?

Because Canvas is a mobile app feature. It shows in the Now Playing view of the Spotify app on a phone and does not render on the desktop app or the web player. This is by design, not a fault with your file.

How long does a Spotify Canvas take to appear?

Usually within a few hours of upload rather than instantly. If it has been more than a day, check that you attached it to the exact track you are playing and that the file meets Spotify's four published requirements.

Can listeners turn Canvas off?

Yes. Spotify offers a setting to disable Canvas playback, and it can also be suppressed on data saver settings or low battery. So a listener not seeing your Canvas does not necessarily mean it is not live.

My Canvas upload keeps failing. What is wrong?

Work through the four published requirements first: 3 to 8 seconds, vertical 9:16, 720 to 1080px tall, MP4 or JPG. If all four are correct, re-export as a standard MP4 from a fresh render. Spotify does not publish a file size limit, so treat size advice from third party guides with caution.

Does every track need its own Canvas?

Yes, Canvas is per track. Adding one to a single track on an album does not apply it to the rest of the record.
