YouTube Thumbnail Best Practices for Experimental Music

Great experimental thumbnails share these qualities:

High contrast - Bold colors and strong light/dark separation so the image pops at 120px wide
Single focal point - One clear subject, not a busy collage
Genre-authentic visuals - generative patterns, impossible geometry, noise textures - viewers should instantly recognize the experimental vibe
Clean composition - Leave space for YouTube's timestamp overlay in the bottom-right

When using the AI generator, try prompts like "Impossible geometry with bold color clash, surreal and striking" to get thumbnails that feel authentic to experimental while being visually striking at small sizes.

Thumbnail format guide

Square (1:1) - Works as a centered YouTube thumbnail, Spotify canvas, or Instagram post
