YouTube Thumbnail Best Practices for Indie Music

Great indie thumbnails share these qualities:

High contrast - Bold colors and strong light/dark separation so the image pops at 120px wide
Single focal point - One clear subject, not a busy collage
Genre-authentic visuals - hand-drawn illustrations, collage, candid photos - viewers should instantly recognize the indie vibe
Clean composition - Leave space for YouTube's timestamp overlay in the bottom-right

When using the AI generator, try prompts like "Bold handwritten text over vintage photo, authentic feel" to get thumbnails that feel authentic to indie while being visually striking at small sizes.

Thumbnail format guide

Square (1:1) - Works as a centered YouTube thumbnail, Spotify canvas, or Instagram post
