When doing it yourself stops making sense

Plenty of artists are happy generating their own artwork, and there are good free tools for it. The point where that breaks down is usually the same: the release is booked, the track is finished, and the cover is the last thing standing between you and uploading it.

What a cover actually has to do

It has to survive being shrunk. A cover that reads well at full size and turns to mush at thumbnail scale fails where it matters, because most people meet it as a small square in a list.

It has to work at several sizes without being re-cropped badly. Distribution wants one size, upload forms want another, social feeds want a third. Resizing a finished file after the fact is where covers go soft or lose their composition.

And it has to belong to the music. A generic image on a specific song reads as an afterthought, however polished it is.
