Why there is more than one size

Distribution, upload forms and social feeds each expect a different square. None of them is wrong, they just serve different surfaces, and a release usually touches all three.

3000x3000 is the safe size for distribution. 1400x1400 is a common upload requirement. 1080x1080 drops straight into a feed without being resampled.

The part that actually breaks

Resizing a finished cover after the fact is where things go wrong. Fine detail that reads at 3000 disappears at thumbnail scale, and text set for a large square becomes unreadable when it is shrunk.

Cutting every size from one master, with the composition checked at the smallest size, avoids that. It is the difference between artwork that survives being small and artwork that only works in a portfolio.

Design for the thumbnail first

Most people will meet your cover as a small square in a list. If it does not read there, it does not read.

In practice that means strong shapes, high contrast, and restraint with fine detail and small type - decisions made at the start, not fixed by exporting at a higher resolution.
